Health and Physical Education

Students engage in a variety of sports and sports-related activities in an active, supportive environment where every student is challenged and finds success. Emphasis is placed on student-led participation and positive social interaction. In the middle grades, students build on fundamental skills to expand their technical abilities and explore healthy living, nutrition, and decision-making.

 

Athletics

Meridian fields athletic teams and sports programs for both elementary and middle school students throughout the school year. Our programs give students the opportunity to develop physical skills, practice teamwork, and compete as part of a school community. Many of our sports programs run in both the fall and spring seasons.

 

Our athletic programs are organized through community partnerships with organizations like DC Scores, which combines soccer and poetry. Practices take place at nearby facilities including Harrison Park and Recreation Center and Petworth Recreation Park.

Elementary School Athletics

Elementary students have access to a range of sports programs across the school year, including:

 

Soccer (DC Scores) | Grades K-5 | Fall and Spring

Elementary soccer runs through our partnership with DC Scores, which combines soccer with a poetry class component. Younger students in grades K-2 participate in Jr. Scores, with age-appropriate practice and game schedules. Students in grades 3-5 practice and compete as part of the Elementary Boys and Girls program. All sessions take place at Harrison Park and Recreation Center.

Tennis Training | Grades 1-5 | Fall

Elementary students in grades 1 through 5 have the opportunity to learn and develop tennis skills through our fall Tennis Training program, held at the Harrison Basketball Court at 1330 V Street NW.

 

 

Middle School Athletics

Middle school students compete on school teams across multiple sports throughout the year, including:

 

Boys Soccer (DC Scores) | Fall and Spring

Middle school boys soccer runs through our DC Scores partnership, combining practice and game time with a weekly poetry class. The team practices and plays at Petworth Recreation Park.

 

Girls Soccer (DC Scores) | Fall and Spring

Middle school girls soccer also runs through DC Scores, with the same combination of soccer and poetry. The team practices and plays at Petworth Recreation Park.

 

Flag Football | Co-Ed | Fall

Our middle school co-ed flag football team practices at Harrison Park and Field and competes in games throughout the fall season.

 

Cross Country | Grades 6-8 | Fall

Middle school students in grades 6 through 8 can join the Meridian Owls Cross Country team. The team trains at the Banneker track at 2500 Georgia Avenue NW.
