The Parent Center holds workshops regularly to support parent engagement and family involvement. During the 2017–18 school year, Meridian will sponsor a workshop to help parents learn to use and manage the PowerSchool Parent Portal; another will focus on resources that parents can use to support their child’s education at home. Please check our announcements for upcoming dates and times!

Some examples of past workshops:

Parents as Students

The Parent Center partnered with the YMCA to provide GED training to Meridian parents seeking to complete their high school equivalency. Participants attended weekly GED-prep courses while learning job-readiness skills, including interviewing and resume writing.

Behavior Management Workshop

This workshop, lead by our Mental Health Clinician, addresses various concerns participants have about classroom and home behavior, discipline, and behavior management skills.

Scholastic Book Fair

The Scholastic Book Fair encourages parents to read actively with their students. Students have the option to buy books at the fair for a week each year. The Parent Center also has used and new books for a week for parents to take home.

Promoting Student Health

The Parent Center sponsored two school-wide initiatives to promote healthy lifestyles. With support from DC Smiles, all students were screened for free for dental care in the fall. Students needing additional dental support received subsidized dental care through the DC Smiles program. Also, thanks to a partnership with Kaiser Permanente, all students received lessons on healthy lifestyles targeted to their age groups.
